The tide was out, leaving the flats broad and pale, stretching quietly toward the horizon. The air carried salt and the faint trace of seaweed drying where the water had been.

Set back from the shore, she stands within sight of the estuary. The ground around her is firm and worn, crossed by familiar routes — dogs pulling at leads, bicycles passing, footsteps returning along the same line they always take. The place knows repetition.

Her branches lift and spread with the wind rather than against it. Leaves turn and settle, showing different faces as the air moves through. The trunk holds the marks of weather more than age, darkened where rain has passed often, lighter where it dries quickly.

I stayed for a short while as clouds moved slowly across the light. The water beyond remained distant, the flats unchanged. Nothing in the scene asked for attention. Everything continued.

She does not face the sea as lookout or signal. She stands where land remains land, close enough to feel the openness without yielding to it. The wind passes. The tide returns. She stays.

When I turned back, the shore was already filling behind me.

The paths held their line.

From the Greengatherer’s Journal

When the wind turns from the sea and the light begins to change, I find myself walking again. The air carries salt and leaf together.
