Do you remember what we spotted through the trees at Royden Park?<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Thurstaston was ahead.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

And somewhere beyond the hill was the sea.<\/p>

Well, I said we should find out what was there.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

So come on.<\/p>

We're going to the shore!<\/p>

Following the Salt Wind<\/strong><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

The woods don't disappear all at once.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

At first we're still beneath the trees, with roots under our feet and autumn leaves scattered along the path.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

But keep going.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Can you feel the wind changing?<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

The trees begin to thin, the sky grows bigger, and every now and then there's something else in the air.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Salt.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

That means we're getting closer.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

I could fly ahead and check.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

But that would be cheating.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

We'll discover it together.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

And then, suddenly, the trees give way.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

There it is.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

The Dee stretches out in front of us, with the Welsh hills far beyond the water.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

And below us is the shore.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

We made it!<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Down to the Shore<\/strong><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Now we have a new problem.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Where do we look first?<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

The tide has been busy.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

There are pieces of driftwood along the shore, shells among the sand and pebbles, and all sorts of lines and patterns left behind by the water.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Yesterday, some of these things might have been somewhere completely different.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Today, the tide has left them here for us to discover.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Which makes us...<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Shoreline Detectives!<\/strong><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Every detective needs sharp eyes.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Mine are particularly sharp.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Robin eyes.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Let's see what we can find.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Perhaps there's a shell with an unusual pattern.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Maybe there's a feather caught between the stones.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Or a piece of driftwood that looks like something else entirely.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

A dragon?<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

A crooked walking stick?<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

The world's smallest pirate ship?<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

All right, perhaps not a pirate ship.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

But don't decide too quickly.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Sometimes the best discoveries are the things everyone else has walked straight past.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

A Mystery in the Sand<\/strong><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Wait.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

What's that?<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

There's a mark in the wet sand.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

It could have been made by a bird.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Or perhaps something was dragged along by the tide.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Come closer and have a look.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

What do you think made it?<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

I had an excellent theory.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Then a wave came in and washed half of it away.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Detective work is difficult at the seaside.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

And that's another thing about the shore: it never stays quite the same.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

The tide comes in.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

The tide goes out.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

New things arrive, old marks disappear, and the next explorer might find something completely different from us.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

So we'd better keep looking while we can.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

\u00a0\ud83d\udd0e<\/span> Investigate:<\/strong> Look for a mark or track in the sand. What do you think made it?<\/p>

\u00a0\ud83d\udc42<\/span> Listen:<\/strong> Can you hear the waves, the wind and a bird? Which sound is loudest?<\/p>

\u00a0\ud83d\udcad<\/span> Imagine:<\/strong> Find a piece of driftwood or an unusual stone. What does its shape remind you of?<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

The tide is creeping a little closer now.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

And I've spotted something further along the Dee.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Reeds.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Lots of them.<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

I wonder what might be hiding\u2014or hopping, crawling or splashing\u2014among those?<\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

There's only one way to find out.<\/p>
